welcome to arizona piano institute!

Arizona Piano Institute is quickly establishing itself as a premier music institution for artistic endeavors by young artists and guest artists alike. When I first heard about API and its prestigious faculty roster in 2014, I immediately seized the opportunity to enroll my students in the Summer Festival and audit its invaluable workshops and masterclasses. We are lucky to have this right in the heart of Phoenix, a major metropolitan center that should rightly host a program of this kind and caliber. Having attended summer festivals as a student and later being involved with various music schools and conservatories, I was elated to see such a program emerging in the Southwest. The atmosphere of API’s Summer Festival is unique, the motivational approach infectious, and the thoughtful insight, encouragement, and stimulation inspirational.

When the Institute first asked me to join their Board of Directors, I was honored and humbly accepted. Serving initially as Director of Public Relations, and later Vice President, I witnessed API’s extraordinary team first hand. In 2018, I enthusiastically accepted the offer to become Artistic Director. I have since had the pleasure of continuing our mission and expanding our program. Our amazing team of dedicated directors is deeply involved in Arizona’s musical community and invested in supporting young artists. Our diverse skills enable fruitful collaboration and heartfelt camaraderie, a remarkable yet rare combination. And it is all for the love of music that we gather with such warm spirits and commitment.

I invite you to browse our new and improved website for the latest details on our programs and what we are all about. You can peruse our online shop for recordings and memorabilia, which supports artists and API.

I also encourage you to take part. Collaborating with fellow artists is crucial, especially in a city rapidly growing in population and cultural identity. As such, we are combining forces with several partners this year and welcome you to collaborate with us, too. Once you see and experience who we are and what we accomplish, you will no doubt want to share and spread the word!

Of course, none of this comes to fruition and sustains itself without the collective support of the community. Please consider making a gift to our nonprofit organization, or volunteer and get a front row seat to some of the best masterclasses and workshops. Help us keep costs low and bring more enriching events to Arizona.

This June, I invite all young pianists, teachers, and the general public to join us for an exciting and inspiring week of festival activities. We have reached a milestone: our fifth season. In honor of this, we are delighted to announce our Inaugural Concerto Competition in partnership with Phoenix Youth Symphony and MusicaNova Orchestra. We hope our six awards, comprised of cash prizes, scholarships, and ample performance engagements—including invitations as guest soloists with two distinguished orchestras—will further encourage our festival participants, collegiate and preparatory. It is also our hope that bringing such an opportunity to Arizona will lend support to our local talent and attract visitors, while simultaneously enhancing the artistic culture and status of our state.

Best wishes in your musical odyssey,

Jessica J. Yam, DMA

The Arizona Piano Institute presents a wonderful opportunity for all of you, dear young pianists, to study with internationally known dedicated teachers, to learn from them, and to connect with like-minded fellow students who are as eager to gain more experience as you are! We hope to see you at the Institute in early June for a week filled with music and fun to explore together the treasures of the rich solo and ensemble piano literature!
